- Listen to videos on YouTube of the song that you want to learn
- Once you find out what the chords are, learn the rhythm and practice playing from chord to chord in rhythm
- Knowing the words of the song helps to learn where the pauses and changes will come.
- Practice playing the song with musicians who play other instruments
- Move around the keyboard. Try playing sounds higher and lower on the keys and mixing up the chord inversions.
Show up and stay commited to learning - The more you keep coming each week and keep up the commitment, you will learn more and more. Starting to learn a new instrument may seem intimidating at first. When in lessons, make sure you take your time to listen to the instruction and that you focus on the task at hand. Bring a binder with you to store your notes from each lesson. Use a practice tool and tracker - I love to use online music tools such as YouTube, which has several music instrument song tutorials, I also love to use Yousisian, they have a free option where you can select the instrument you are studying and choose from many free songs and practice activities for up to fifteen minutes a day. You can also keep a practice log in your musician binder. Start at the right age - 1 to 5 year olds would do better starting in an early childhood music class where they can learn around other's their own age and play games. After age 6, learning an instrument in private lessons such as piano, ukulele, voice, drums, and flute is a great way to go. Stay motivated - Lessons may seem hard at first but once you learn the basics, your eyes will be open to all of the amazing sounds you can create with your own instrument. Buy the right music books and materials - The right books really matter! When you play your instrument at home, you will want the books that make you excited to keep practicing. Play what you are learning for a friend or family membe r - This shows them that you are excited about music and this is something to connect through. It always feels good when out parents and friends tell us we sounded great! It could even inspire them to pick up an instrument and learn too.
